How's Does a Free $50.00 Sound?

I just stumbled across an offer that I thought was worth sharing. Wachovia is offering $50.00 for opening a new checking account. That's it - no strings attached. Go HERE to see the details of the offer. If you're too lazy, here's the gist:
  • Offer is for new customers only
  • You must open the account with a deposit of $100.00
  • You must open the account before 1/31/2008
  • The bonus will be deposited within 120 days of opening the account
That's all there is to it. This is better than most of these offers I've seen. Typically they require you to open with a higher balance, open a fee-based account (this one works with a free checking account), or set up a few direct deposits. If you can part with $100.00 for 120 days, you're going to get a 50% payback. Not too shabby. If you've got a Wachovia nearby, I'd say definitely take advantage!!

We're Back...and That Was Not Fun

Let me just start by saying that this Christmas will go down as the Christmas nightmare to end all nightmares. I don't even know where to start. Everyone at my in-laws (including me) did our best imitation of the picture for most of the time we were in Arkansas. Couple that with some serious flight delays, standing in long lines, a baby that would not sleep, and losing my fantasy football season despite starting 10-0 and you can see where this is headed. UNBELIEVABLE.

We did enjoy having Bailey's first Christmas. Santa brought her some nice new tub toys, some books, and left some building blocks and a new playroom for her for when she got home to Charlotte. Other than that though, it pretty much was awful. Next year, we're staying home and we'll just visit after Christmas.

Here's hoping yours was better than ours!

Online Savings Rates are Dropping

As expected, the Fed recently cut interest rates again and we're starting to see the cut's impact on savings rates. My HSBC Direct account recently cut my interest rate by a quarter point and most online banks are following suit. I wrote about online savings accounts a month or two ago and recommended 3 banks - HSBC, ING Direct, and Emigrant Direct. All have recently cut their rates.
  • ING Direct went from 4.2% to 4.1%
  • Emigrant Direct went from 4.75% to 4.65%
  • HSBC went from 4.50% to 4.25%

So...what should you do about this? You can always look for CDs which typically offer higher yields than savings account but tie your money up for a period of time and charge a penalty if you have to touch the money before the period is up. You can also consider moving your money from one account to another - chasing the highest interest rate. That, however, has a cost to it as you're not making any money while the funds are in transit from one online bank to another. To see how much that's going to cost you and determine whether it's worth your while to move the funds, head over to My Money Blog (the name of the site - not MY money blog) and use their "Ultimate Rate Chaser Calculator" - a great tool to demonstrate how much money you'll lose moving money around and how long it'll take to make the money back.

Scientists Discover Real Life Smurf

I was casually watching the news last night when they ran a quick segment on a man named Paul Karason. Apparently this guy is moving from Oregon to California in hopes of finding a more accepting environment for his BLUE SKIN. He has been drinking colloidal silver for years as a sort of cure-all tonic and I'll be darned if it hasn't turned his skin blue. Read more HERE.

When I saw Paul, immediately I thought that this guy will definitely be getting the role of Papa Smurf if/when the Smurf live action movie is made:

This guy's a dead ringer?!

Never Stop Learning

One recent trend that deserves monitoring is the trend towards making educational material available for free. Many top name universities have started putting their courses online - for free! Colleges are seeking to build their brands and connect with potential applicants across the globe. Those of us who aren't potential applicants can benefit from their largesse!

ITunes has a portion of their site dedicated to college lectures that can be downloaded for free. You can get all kinds of material here - from seminary courses on Old Testament to cutting edge science courses from MIT. If you ever think back to your college days and wish you hadn't opted out of that hard European History course, odds are that you can probably find one online and enjoy all the learning - without all the stress of taking the tests.

Go HERE to see what's available on ITunes U. If you're not an ITunes user, HERE is a list of universities with courses available online. Check them out and learn something new. Enjoy!

Taking Some Holiday Time Off

We are on the move for the holidays so things will probably be pretty slow around here. I'll be back after Christmas! In the meantime, browse the archives. I hope you'll find something helpful there!

Are You a Collector?

I recently found out that the guy that lives across the street from me has an entire room in his house dedicated to KISS memorabilia. I have yet to see said collection but am extremely excited about the prospect of doing so. I collected baseball cards as a kid and have held on to them in hopes that someday every other guy my age will lose his collection and I'll have something of value. I'm not much of a collector of anything anymore. I am, however, always amazed when I watch these shows about obsessed collectors and they show people that have entire rooms in their house dedicated to some random band or TV show.

I did a little web searching on the topic and came across some pretty strange collections. These people are truly devoted to their subject of interest (to say the least):

BEER CANS

MR. POTATOHEAD MEMORABILIA
(this is only one of the 6 pictures of his collection)
See the rest HERE

VIDEO GAME MEMORABILIA

There are many many others - some weirder than others. I found a ping pong ball collection that dates back to the 1920s. A Smurf collection that takes up an entire room. A Strawberry Shortcake doll collection that takes up multiple rooms. A condiment package collection that contained over 3000 packets of ketchup, mustard, you name it. Weird stuff. If you have a room dedicated to collecting something (other than dust), I want to know about it!

Do Your Own Tech Support

In my extended family, I am the tech support staff. I'm OK with that fact most of the time (unless the call for help comes in the middle of an important game or someting). There are, however, things that we all could do that would make things easier for whoever that person is in your life that you call when your computer is not working as it should.

CrossLoop is a tool that allows you to give remote control of your desktop to someone via the Internet. When my mom calls me for support, we can both log on to CrossLoop and I can control her computer from my computer. I can see her screen, access the programs on her computer, etc. which makes technical troubleshooting SO much easier. Definitely download this and get your tech support go-to person to do the same!

Most of the problems that I find on other people's computers are caused by spyware and that's why you need to download AdAware. AdAware is used to scan your computer of malicious files, spyware, etc. and clean them off. If you don't know what spyware is, it's junk that you don't want on your computer that you pick up as your surf around the internet. At best, it slows your computer down. At worst, it can completely freeze your computer, log your key strokes, all kinds of stuff that's bad. Get this one for sure and use it at least once per week.

Spyware Blaster is another spyware related program that you need to get. This program addresses/stops spyware BEFORE it gets on your machine. Running AdAware is great to clean off anything that you may already have but you need SpyWare Blaster running to keep the stuff off in the first place.

The last piece of software that you should get is called CCleaner (it used to be called Crap Cleaner - seriously). This is a program that scans your computer and gets rid of alot of dead files that you don't need anymore. It also cleans up your cookies (pieces of software that websites put on your machine so that they can 'recognize' you when you come back), gets rid of temporary internet files (some sites save some of their content on your local machine so the site will load faster), etc. This is a good tool for cleaning up disk space and keeping things in good working order.

All of these programs are free and all of them are essential tools that I use when I do technical support for people. If you are scared to use them, drop me a note and I'll walk you through it or connect to you using CrossLoop and show you how to do it. Either way - get them for yourself and you should notice improved performance. Good luck!

Professional Athelete Guessing Game

These things are so dang popular I thought I'd do yet another. Oh yeah - I'm gonna keep doing them until somebody starts to like it.

Now - here are 9 professional atheletes. Other than never having been in your kitchen, what do they have in common?

More Politics: Find Out Who's Lying

I believe that, unfortunately, almost every politician on the national stage is willing to lie to get elected. Sometimes it's well intentioned lies and other times it's flat out smear tactics - but a lie is a lie. Fortunately for us, there are people out there that dedicate more time than you or I have to tracking down who's doing the lying and what the truth is.

PolitiFact.com is a site sponsored by the St. Petersburg Times and it stays on top of the lies being told by the candidates. It covers lies told in speeches (like the one Tom Tancredo told about the cost of illegal immigration), lies told by one candidate about another (like the one about John Edwards not being a populist told by Obama), and also breaks down all the questionable statements made by the candidates by category (immigration, abortion, etc.).

So - the next time you hear one candidate accuse another of something or you hear a candidate make some random statement about the cost of this or that, head over to Politifact.com and see if they're telling the truth or not!

More Help Deciding on a Candidate

I came across another pretty cool site today that's aimed at helping people decide on a candidate to support in the Presidential race. Glassbooth.org asks you to rank which issues are most important to you and then asks you how strong your opinions are on certain issues (strongly agree, agree, disagree, etc.). Based on your responses, the site tells you which 3 candidates align most closely with your views and gives you a breakdown of which, if any, issues you and the top candidate disagree on.

Pretty cool and pretty enlightening. Without telling you exactly who ranked out as my top 3, I will tell you that none of them were in my top 3 prior to taking this little quiz. I probably need to get more informed!

The Best Job I've Ever Had

Most of you probably know that I spent one year teaching high school about 6 years ago. I graduated from business school, took a high powered job in consulting, and watched it all disappear when the dot com bust happened. I ended up taking a job as a computer programming teacher and ended up absolutely loving it. If I could've made any money doing it, I'd be there today.

One of the other things I really loved was the fact that I also got to coach basketball. It was a weird "right place, right time" type of thing - but I was there the year that the school had our best team ever. We finished in the final 8 in the state in the largest classification for public high schools. We had a team of dedicated guys that knew our system (the Princeton offense) and we beat a lot of teams with better athletes. We had one player that went to a low Division 1 school (Campbell University). The picture includes all the guys that I coached against that year that ended up playing in Division 1 basketball and/or the NBA. What a collection of talent!! They are (starting in the center and then at top left going clockwise):

Chris Paul - New Orleans Hornets/Wake Forest - NBA Rookie of the Year
Thomas Wilkins - UNC Chapel Hill
Eric Williams - Wake Forest
Todd Hendley - UNC Wilmington/Wake Forest
Shavlik Randolph - Philadelphia 76ers / Duke
DeEarnest McLemore - Wagner
Shawan Robinson - Clemson
James Mays - Clemson
Mack Montgomery - Columbia
Cameron Stanley - Wake Forest
Bryan Nieman - NC State

I'm proud to say that the only two guys in this picture that we lost to were Chris Paul and Shavlik Randolph. Definitely a year I'll always remember!!

Website Recommendation: 3 Cool Phone-Related Sites

I don't know about you, but I spend a lot of time on the phone. There are days that I leave work feeling like a phone is growing out of the side of my head. I love to find tools, websites, etc. that can help me be more productive on the phone or that can help me eliminate some of the time I spend on the phone. Today I'm recommending three different websites that can help you be more productive or spend less time with a phone stuck to your head.

Don't you just hate sitting on hold when you call a customer support number? I absolutely detest it. Bringo.com helps with this problem. You go to the site, select the company that you're needing to get in touch with, enter your phone number and they CALL YOU when the human is on the phone. No more walking around all day with that hold-time song playing in your head over and over!

Jott.com solves another problem that I have regularly - forgetting to send a note to someone before I leave the office. Register at Jott.com, enter your contact list, and then you can dial Jott's 1-800 number anytime and record a message that will then be emailed to the contact you specify. The site will either transcribe your message to text or will send the recipient a link and they can actually listen to your voice when they click on the link. You can also use this site to send yourself notes or things you think of on the move - just make yourself one of your contacts!

Most of us probably have conference call capabilities at work but I don't know anybody that has a personal conference call service. With Rondee.com, now you do. Rondee allows you to have conference calls with as many people as you like and all they have to do is call into the Rondee service. It's based in San Diego, CA - so the call could be long distance depending on where you live. For those with cell phones or unlimited long distance calling, that's not an issue. The site offers all the features of a good conference call service - web based scheduling, call recording, attendance tracking, etc. - and it's all free with no need to download software!!

I hope that these sites can help you. Enjoy!

What to Buy at the Dollar Store (and What to Avoid!)

Dollar stores are well known to smart shoppers. These are places where everything they sell costs $1.00 and, if you know a few secrets, you can get some good deals. The flip side is true too - if you don't know some secrets, you can buy some pretty useless junk. Here's what SmartMoney says are the best buys at the dollar store:

1. Cleaning Supplies - sponges, detergent, window cleaner, etc. According to the Good Housekeeping Institute, the stuff for sale at the dollar store is made up of the exact same ingredients as the expensive grocery store stuff - it's just been diluted a little bit. They have to find a way to make it cost a dollar! So - unless you need super cleaning power, the dollar store variety should work just fine.

2. Gift Wrap - sells for up to 80% off of what you'd pay at Target or Wal-Mart. My luck has been hit or miss with dollar store gift wrap - sometimes it's pretty flimsy (and see through - which bugs me). I'm also not a good wrapper so that could be part of the problem.

3. Snacks - peanuts, chocolate bars, twinkies, potato chips, etc. If you're stocking up on junk food for a party, you can rack up big savings. Don't make a special trip if you're only buying a couple of things - the savings aren't that huge since the grocery store varieties aren't super expensive.

4. Shampoo - Paula Begoun, author of "Don't Go Shopping for Hair Care Products Without Me" (a book that I've read cover to cover multiple times), says that shampoo is shampoo is shampoo. It's all the same ingredients and it all goes down the drain. The real product to splurge on in hair care products is conditioner! So - buy shampoo at the dollar store and save big time.

5. Kitchen Accessories - save up to 90% buying things like measuring cups, spatulas, cutting boards, etc. at the dollar store. Honestly - is that Williams Sonoma measuring cup any more effective than a cheap $1.00 version? I'll answer for you. No.

Now - that said, there are things to avoid buying at the dollar store. Here's what Shop Smart magazine said should be avoided:

1. Vitamins - In their independent lab tests, some of the multi-vitamins were missing ingredients that were shown on the label. Others did not break down properly and would not have been absorbed by the body. Stick to the drugstore for these.

2. Electrical Products - These things are cheap because they don't go through the inspection process that more expensive products do. Look for the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) safety sticker on electrical products (you likely won't find these at the dollar store!).

3. Toys for Kids Under 3 - Super cheap toys are often mislabeled, have really small parts, and might even contain lead paint. Buy toys with large parts (so large they don't fit through a toilet paper tube) and buy them from somewhere other than the dollar store.

4. Soundalike Brands - Those Dinacell batteries that look like Duracell batteries - don't buy them. Fake goods are often cheap (really cheap) imitations of the real thing and are designed to lure people into buying crappy merchandise. Don't be that guy.

5. Soft Vinyl Lunch Boxes - If you're getting a lunch box for a dollar, something's wrong with it. Often times they have high lead content. You don't want your food stuck inside one of these!

So...now you know what should and should not be bought at the dollar store. Does it bother anybody else that there are stores with dollar in the title that aren't actual dollar stores? What's the deal with places like Family Dollar and Dollar General? Don't put the word 'Dollar' in your title if you're not a dollar store. That's my new decree. Oh well. Enough from me - enjoy your savings.

Here Comes Santa Claus

Britney and I recently engaged in the timeless tradition of taking your young child to the mall to sit on Santa's lap. Fortunately it was a good experience. Bailey thought Santa was really funny and we got a couple of really good pictures. Even better, this particular Santa looked great. Unfortunately, that's not always the case. I remember sitting on Santa's lap as a kid and wondering why he was wearing wingtips with black bags around his legs. I also remember thinking that several Santas I met had fake beards. Kids get smart pretty quick.

In honor of the bad Santas I had growing up, I give you a collection of bad Santas for your very own trip down memory lane.

This child's Christmas memories will include the stale smell of Wild Turkey on Santa's breath.

Sorry kids. There's no Santa Claus this year. Santa's in lock down for 10-20 for inappropriate contact with minors.

The economic woes reached new lows when Santa was forced to get a second job as a middle school principal.

You WILL HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS. Is that understood?

Just terrible. "Vinny! Have you seen my bag of cotton balls?"

Celebrity Guessing Game

Since last week's wildly popular NBA Guessing Game was such a mega-hit, I decided to give it another go. So...other than never having been in your kitchen...does anybody know what these 7 celebrities have in common?

NBA Team Names - What Could Have Been

I am not a huge NBA fan. I watch Charlotte's games when there is nothing else on (meaning no other sporting events) - but I would definitely not say I'm a fanatic. I am, however, excited about some of the upcoming games this week. The highlights include:

Charlotte Spirit vs. Milwaukee Skunks
Minnesota Polars vs. Orlando Juice
Miami Suntan vs. Memphis Express
Phoenix Dust Devils vs. Portland Chinooks

If those names are unfamiliar to you, it's because those were all franchise names that were NOT chosen when these teams came into existance. I remember well the public uproar over the name Charlotte Spirit. The original proposed colors were red, white, and blue and the mascot was going to be some kind of ghost. It was so lame. All of the names here are pretty bad - probably why they weren't chosen. The Orlando Juice ended up being used later by a team in the short lived Senior League (baseball league filled with 50 year old ex-big leaguers - I remember that too).

You can read more about how team names came to be HERE, HERE, and HERE.

Don't Go to an Ugly College!

With three nieces and a nephew heading off to college in the next two years, I thought it appropriate to post Campus Squeeze's 20 Ugliest College Campuses. If you want to read the reasons why these campuses are on the list, you can read the original article HERE. To satisfy my own curiousity, I'm also going to list where each of these 20 ugly schools ranks in U.S. News' college rankings (in parenthesis). Maybe we'll uncover a relationship between campus beauty and educational quality. Fun!

20. University of Maryland - College Park (54)
19. Rutgers - State University of New Jersey (59)
18. Texas A&M (62)
17. Ithaca College
16. Rochester Institute of Technology
15. Northeastern University (96-tie)
14. Harvey Mudd College (That just sounds ugly!?)
13. UC - San Diego (38)
12. University of Texas at Dallas
11. Drew University
10. Pitzer College (I've heard this place is the pits)
9. Illinois Institute of Technology (96-tie)
8. SUNY - Buffalo (118)
7. NC State University (85)
6. Rowan University
5. Carnegie Mellon University (22)
4. Brandeis University (31)
3. Southern Connecticut State University
2. UMASS - Amherst
1. Drexel University (108)

If there's no ranking shown, the school didn't rank in the top 125 in the nation and nobody reading this blog has any business attending a college ranked 126 or below! Key takeaways from this list:
  • It is possible to get a good degree on an ugly campus (see Carnegie Mellon or Brandeis)
  • Insitutes of Technology do not fare well on the beauty scale. As an Institute of Technology alum, I can vouch for this fact. I'm just glad GT didn't make this list.
  • Colleges with ugly names have a high probability of being physically ugly (see Harvey Mudd and Pitzer). The fact that THIS school and THIS school are not on the list is a mystery.
  • Don't go to college in upstate New York.

Now - go choose an aesthetically pleasing campus and get educated!

Dealing with Annoying Coworkers (or Annoying People in General)

We all have them in our lives - the people that just annoy the heck out of you. To be honest, there are quite a few in my life. Some of them I don't even know. I just see them on the elevator or on the bus everyday. If you are the guy that takes the elevator down from the 9th floor to the 8th floor every time I get on the elevator - you annoy me. If you are the guy that holds the elevator door open for people that are not even in the elevator lobby yet (think holding door open for about 45 seconds) - you annoy me. If you're the guy that clips your nails in the cube next to me - you annoy me. Sorry - my list is just getting going.

Fortunately for the easily annoyed (people like me) - there are several websites available that help you deal with these situations. These sites allow you to send anonymous tips to people. Some allow free form text - meaning you can be as friendly or as mean as you choose to be (remember - you get more flies with honey). Others have pre-populated emails that are kind of funny but get your point across.

Probably the most obviously named site in the list, AnnoyingCoworker.com allows you to send emails anonymously. The site publishes some of the funnier/ruder emails on the site (anonymously) - so don't be so mean that your email ends up there. Just remember, you probably had bad breath at some point in your life too.

AnonAdvice.com also allows you to send anonymous emails. Pretty generic/plain input screen but it gets the job done. If you're so nice that you don't want someone to get the email from annoyingcoworker.com (you don't want them to know they annoy you), go here instead.

SendaTip.com is a little different than the other two sites. This site serves the same purpose but does not let you enter the text yourself. It has a menu of annoying habits that it lets you choose from and then it does the rest. Sometimes this works better if you don't know exactly what to say to someone that needs to bathe more often. Let the site handle that part. It does not, however, have ever potential annoyance - so if the thing that bugs you isn't on the list, you're going to have to do the work yourself at one of the first two sites.

I used to work in Memphis with this guy that wore blue jeans EVERY day. This was in a company where the dress code was business casual. We were allowed to wear jeans on Fridays but, for some reason, he just decided that every day was Friday for him. It got to the point that it started driving me crazy. It was great to have a site like this to send him the 'Inappropriate Pants' email - and it did the trick. The next Monday, he showed up in some khakis that looked like he slept in them. I considered sending a 'Get an Iron' email - but decided to let it go.

A Better Gift Card Site

Given my post yesterday regarding gift cards, I thought it'd be timely to tell you that in the last 24 hours, I've found an even BETTER gift card site. Leveragecard.com offers features that none of the others offer. It's not the place to go if you're looking to sell your gift card. It IS the place to go if you want to:
  • Track the balance on a gift card
  • EARN INTEREST on gift card balances - even if you didn't buy it from this site!!
  • Buy VIRTUAL gift cards - you don't run the risk of losing these the way that you do with the plastic cards
Given that $1 of every $4 given on gift cards goes unredeemed (either because cards get thrown out, stolen, etc.), this site is great. Track balances and earn interest on them too - that's a great feature. Check it out!!

I'm Annoyed

I had that very poster hanging on the back of my bedroom door all the way through high school. Yes, four guys that look like ugly girls - but that's beside the point. What is not beside the point is that this thing is selling on Ebay right now for $74.00. I knew I should've hung on to all my Stryper gear. Dang it!

One Less Item for My Christmas List

I am in the process of finalizing my Christmas list and was thinking of adding a carpet cleaner to it. We have a dog and a baby and between the two of them - what with all the spills, accidents, etc. - our carpet looks pretty bad at times. I was just about to add it to the list when I stumbled across this video. Now - the real question - does this really work?

How to Get Rid of Your Unwanted Christmas Present (or How to Never Pay Full Price Again)

You know you're going to get at least one for Christmas this year. They're the easiest gift to give and consumers will buy $17 BILLION of them this holiday season. They are gift cards and they're big business. The problem with gift cards, however, is that there's some likelihood that you're going to get one to a place that you rarely go (at best) or you absolutely hate (at worst). Remember that year that Aunt Edna gave you the gift card to the Chinese Buffet with the C sanitation rating? That's the problem with gift cards. Fortunately, you're in luck! Three new sites offer consumers the chance to buy, sell, and trade gift cards. Trade that Chinese Buffet card for a Home Depot card or sell it to someone with an indiscriminating pallet that doesn't mind getting salmonella.

CardAvenue.com requires that gift card owners include the toll-free number for their card and that sellers check the balance before offering it to others. CardAvenue charges a 6.25 % fee from the seller and a 50-cent closing fee only if a sale or trade is completed. If the card doesn't attract a new owner, the seller isn't out any money.

Swapagift.com charges a $4 flat fee to list a gift card for sale or swap. If you just want to get rid of a card, they will also pay you 70% of face value and then resell it themselves.

PlasticJungle.com charges a 10% commission fee to sellers for every gift card sale. They also buy gift cards and pay anywhere from 55% to 65% of face value, depending on which retailer the card comes from.

So...now you know how to dump those unwanted Christmas presents. But what does this have to do with never paying full price again? Well, if you think about it, almost every store known to mankind offers gift cards. If you could go to one of these three sites and buy a gift card for Target or Wal-Mart and get it for 10% off, why wouldn't you do that? You know you'll use it up over time and it's instant savings. It's like going with a % off coupon everytime you go shopping. If you really wanted to get fancy, you could buy a gift card on one of these sites, shop online using one of the rebate sites I've discussed, and apply an online coupon that you can get from one of the coupon sites I've discussed. You could be looking at 30% off every time you shop. Now that's a good deal. Check it out!

NBA Guessing Game - Here's the Answer

While Scott's guess of people who have never been in his kitchen is, technically, accurate, the significance of the guys in the picture are that they are the last remaining players from the old Charlotte Hornets. All others have retired. When these guys end their careers, there will literally be no trace of this franchise remaining - the building they played in has been torn down, the uniforms/colors have been changed, and there's a new team in Charlotte. 19 years ago they were brand new and the city was crazy for them and now all that remains is 7 guys. Sad.

(Incidentally, the 7 guys are: Alonzo Mourning, Ricky Davis, Baron Davis, Jamaal Magloire, Eddie Jones, Brad Miller, and Malik Rose)

NBA - Guessing Game

Here's a little guessing game for you. Does anybody know what the significance of the guys in this photo is?

Wanna See Something Scary?

If this doesn't freak you out, you're in the minority. I don't like even Googling my own name much less going to a site like one of the two below where it proves that there is far more information floating around out there about me than I want there to be. Check for yourself - if one of these two sites doesn't find you (and then subsequently display a ton of information about you - like your relatives, past roomates (?!), etc.) consider yourself lucky!

BlogRush - My New Widget

You may have noticed that I have a new widget in my right hand navigation bar. I'm talking about the little reddish box that says "From the Blogosphere". It's replaced the pictures of Bailey. I did that for a couple of reasons. One - this little box is supposed to serve up targeted content that might be of interest to readers of this blog. Two - it, theoretically, publishes some of my postings in a little box displayed on somebody elses website, thereby sending more people to my blog (so far - 1 additional visitor!). Third - I realized that I'm probably starting to get readers that have no idea who Bailey is so I figured posts/content about interesting topics might be more interesting than pictures of a baby in a bee suit.

So - if you were wondering what that thingy is - that's the answer. If you have your own blog, you can try it out too. Go HERE.

Healthcare - Are We Getting What We're Paying For?

I recently went through my company's annual benefits enrollment process and, much to my chagrin, was blasted with another sizable increase in my healthcare costs. Every year the costs of health insurance, my out of pocket deductables, my prescription deductables, etc. keep going up and it's starting to really get under my skin. This past year, in addition to having a baby, we've had a couple of hard to diagnose conditions in my family and the care we've gotten on some of the issues has been, to be frank, marginal at best. I'm starting to wonder if we're getting what we pay for here?

I've read varying reports on how much health care costs are rising, but the general consensus seems to be that they're rising about 3 times faster than inflation. Given that most of us get raises that, at best, are double the rate of inflation, we're looking at more and more of our money going towards health care in the future. That's problematic. Here's what's more problematic to me: According to the World Health Care Organization's latest quality rankings, we're paying huge prices for, get this, the 37th best health care in the world. We're sitting behind countries like Oman, Colombia, Cyprus, Morocco, Dominica, and Costa Rica. Seriously.

That brings me to the concept that's starting to pop-up more and more in the news - Medical Tourism. If these countries that I just mentioned have BETTER health care systems than we do, would you be willing to travel to one of them to have surgery? What if, by going to another country, you could cut your costs by 75%? Currently, this probably only makes sense for elective type surgeries/procedures that your insurance doesn't cover. But - given that it seems like insurance is getting more and more restrictive, we might be looking at a future that defines more and more procedures as elective. Consider these costs:

Carpal Tunnel Surgery (both hands) - Avg. US Cost = $20,000, Avg. Colombian Cost = $2,000
Hip Replacement - Avg. US Cost = $45,000, Avg. Colombian Cost = $8,000

This isn't chump change and this is only a sample from one country. A lot depends on what our currency is doing against the other country's currency - but the dollar's not going to fluctuate enough to make up this kind of cost difference. Something to consider as we head into election season - does anybody have a plan that's going to improve our quality of care without breaking the bank in the process?!

Basketball Stars - Where Are They Now?

I was recently reading some basketball recruiting information when I came upon something that I thought was pretty absurd. This site ranks the top prospects in the greater Kentucky area. That's pretty cool - except that it goes down to the class of 2013. The site is ranking 4'7" sixth graders?! Dear Lord. We can now explain what is wrong with amateur athletics (and, more specifically, amateur athletes!).

Seeing this did bring to mind one of my favorite Sports Illustrated issues from my childhood. In the 1986-1987 College Basketball Preview issue, SI ranked the top players in the nation from 6th grade up to 12th grade. I was an 8th grader at the time and remember being irritated that I had not made the list (or even been considered). Given that I'm the same height now as I was then and was probably a better player then - they were correct in not considering me. Here's how the rest of those guys ended up:

12th Grade - Marcus Liberty - Liberty went on to play at the University of Illinois and was a key player on their 1988-1989 Final Four Team. He left Illinois after his junior year and spent 4 years in the NBA - primarily with the Denver Nuggets. By the time he was 25 years old, he was out of the NBA - relegated to playing in exotic locales like Turkey and Sweden. Today, he's 38 years old and plays for the Chicago Rockstars of the ABA (think MINOR league basketball).

11th Grade - Alonzo Mourning - Mourning has had a long, successful career in the NBA. After being named an All-American at Georgetown, Mourning was the 2nd overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets. He has since played for the Miami Heat and the New Jersey Nets. He is a seven time NBA All-Star, two time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, and was a key player on Miami's 2006 NBA Championship team. Perhaps the most impressive thing about Mourning - he's done it all with one kidney since having a kidney transplant in 2003.

10th Grade - Kenny Anderson - Anderson was a three time Parade All-American, McDonald's All American, and Gatorade National Player of the year during his senior year in high school. He went on to Georgia Tech, perhaps the nation's greatest academic and athletic institution (seriously), and entered the NBA after his sophomore season. He was the second overall pick in the 1991 NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets and went on to play 14 years in the NBA, last seen with the LA Clippers in 2005. Today Kenny Anderson is the head coach of the CBA's Atlanta Krunk (seriously).

9th Grade - Damon Bailey - Damon Bailey was a four-time all-state basketball player in basketball-crazy Indiana. He led his high school to a state championship during his senior year in front of 41,000 fans in the Hoosier Dome! Bailey played four years at Indiana for coach Bobby Knight and was third team All-American and first team all-Big Ten during his senior year. He played one year in the NBA for the Indiana Pacers and then went on to play several more years in the old CBA (think AAA baseball). He retired as a player and went on to coach his high school, Bedford North Lawrence, before resigning earlier this year. Today he's in the industrial supply business.

8th Grade - Barnabas James - the guy who beat me out for this honor was last heard from in 1991. That year he was recruited by Coach Tim Floyd (now at Southern California) to play at the University of New Orleans but failed to qualify academically. He was last seen playing for Delgado Community College.

7th Grade - Brian Crow - I could not find much about this guy at all. He was from Orem, Utah and the rumors I heard were that he went on to become a successful decathalete later in his high school years.

6th Grade - Michael Irvin - Chicago area player that went on to become "an average high school player" for Christ the King in Chicago.

So...if you remember that issue of Sports Illustrated, now you know what happened to those guys. If you don't remember it, you can at least see the folly of ranking players in the 6th grade!

Get Paid to Get Organized!

Clutter and disorganization are problems that many of us face. My wife is a great organizer and we still struggle with our clutter from time to time. She showed me a clip recently of an Oprah show that she recorded about compulsive hoarders (think clutter to the extreme). These people had 75 TONS of clutter/garbage in a 3,000 square foot home. It was unreal (and unhealthy - tons of black mold/mildew - disgusting). I doubt that many of the readers of this blog are hoarders - but many of us are probably not as organized as we'd like to be or as we could/should be. What you may not realize, however, is that disorganization is probably costing you money. Here's how:

Opportunity Cost - We've all heard the saying that time is money and in many ways that's true. When viewed through that lens, every time you spend time searching for something that you can't put a finger on, you're costing yourself money (not to mention the energy spent and frustration from not being able to find something that you KNOW is there).

Bad Purchases - How many times have you marvelled at what you were throwing away when you cleaned out your refrigerator? How many times have you had to run out to a midnight store or pharmacy because you didn't have something you need? These events are avoidable events. All it takes is some planning and organization. Plan your menus ahead of time. Buy only what you need. Stock up on staples that you know you'll use over time. Don't buy something and get home to find that you already had it (even if you take it back, you're costing yourself time again!).

Financial Mistakes - If you don't have a pretty good organization system, I'm betting that you, at some point, have missed a bill payment and it ended up costing you money. If that hasn't happened to you, I bet you've made late payments on overdue movies/library books/etc. because you either forgot you had them or couldn't find them. Lack of organization can be a killer from a financial standpoint. There are rebate opportunities, price matching/beating terms that you could be taking advantage of, store credits that must be taken advantage of before they expire, overdraft fees that could be avoided, tax breaks that you could be taking advantage of - all kinds of things that require a bit of organization and planning and could be saving you money.

My personal opinion is that the biggest reason that people don't get organized and struggle with clutter is that it's a problem that tends to overwhelm. We simply can't figure out where to start. If that's you, there's help available!

If you really need help getting organized, the place to start is at NAPO.net. The National Association of Professional Organizers has a directory of organization experts that can come to you and work with you on, literally, getting your house in order. These people can help you create filing systems, figure out what to keep/get rid of, figure out financial strategies so that you can be organized in that area of your life, etc. They exist solely because organization is a problem for a lot of people - so don't be afraid to get some help!

Maybe you're not ready to hire a professional - or maybe your lack of organization has put you in a financial position which makes hiring a professional impossible. If that's the case, head over to Amazon.com and take a look at the books that are available on eliminating clutter and getting organized. This link will take you right to the listing: Books on clutter & organization

My point is this - getting organized improves your productivity, eliminates costly financial mistakes, frees you up to do more 'value-added' activities with your limited free time, etc. Who is going to pay you for getting organized? You're paying yourself! Now get started!!

Real Life Superheroes!

If you grew up as a "child of the 80's", it's pretty much a guarantee that the Superfriends were on your weekly "must watch" list. I was a huge fan. I especially liked Zan & Jayna and their space monkey Gleek.

I recently came across a site listing 10 real life superheroes. One of these guys can actually fly and another one has Aquaman's ability to summon fish telepathically. OK - I made that part up - but their talents are cool all the same. Video clips included!
